An increasing number of Connecticut grandparents are financially responsible for the care of their grandchildren, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. In 2009, 33.6 percent of Connecticut grandparents who lived with their grandchildren had financial responsibility for those children, compared to 40.3 percent of grandparents nationwide who lived with their grandchildren. However, from 2006 to 2009 there was a 42 percent increase in the number (+7,096) of Connecticut grandparents living with their grandchildren and who are also financially responsible for them. This greatly outpaced the national increase of 9.8 percent during the same period.
A growing share of grandparent caregivers are responsible for their grandchildren for longer periods of time. The percentage of grandparents who were responsible for their grandchildren for less than one year declined from 24.6, in 2006, to 21.7, in 2009. However, there was a corresponding sharp increase in the percentage that was responsible for their grandchildren for 1 to 4 years, from 31.2 percent to 43.4 percent.
