Parental employment is widely recognized as a key indicator of family economic security, and thus, child well-being. While parents who are employed help sustain their families in the quest for self-sufficiency, employment alone does not guarantee self-sufficiency. It also is accompanied by challenges relating to the care of children. This report explores several facets of parental employment, as informed by data from the decennial Census. (June 2004)
