This report finds that one out of five children (19.6%) who were continuously enrolled in HUSKY A in 2005 received health care for a primary diagnosis of asthma or a prescription for asthma. The prevalence of asthma was higher among male children, children aged 5 years or younger, Hispanic children, and children living in Bridgeport, Hartford, and towns other than New Haven. Approximately one in four (24%) children who had emergency care for asthma in 2005 received follow-up care within 2 weeks of the visit, as recommended, and over half (55%) of children hospitalized for asthma were seen in the 2 weeks following discharge. Most (72%) but not all children with persistent asthma received appropriate medications for long-term control of symptoms. (January 2007)
